Description

In this session you will:

  • Learn basic operation of Deckhands
  • Access most often replaced components
  • See the functional differences between the Deckhand 40 and 25

Hands-on Tasks:

  • Remove the cover and feed line out, Observe how the interaction between the spool bearing and the microswitch controls anchor descent.
    • Note, this is why there is basically no function without an anchor installed.
  • Remove and reinstall Spool on Deckhand 40
  • Remove and Reinstall Control Board on Deckhand 40
  • Remove and Reinstall Switch on Deckhand 25
  • Remove and Reinstall Helical Gear on DH 25

Key Concepts:

  • The interaction between the Microswitch and the Spool Bearing prevents backlashes by only running the motor when tension is on the line. Proper way to set the anchor is to push the down button, and wait for the anchor to engage bottom, then continue to wait until
enough line has been released to reach the desired line angle, once that is reached move the switch to the off position to secure the anchor.
  • Deckhand 40 internal motor parts are not available, the motor/gearbox must be replaced as an assembly.
  • The Deckhand 40 has a very robust gear train, but securing the anchor with the safety shackle is still strongly recommended.
  • The Deckhand 40 Control board is a relatively simple 3 relay array with some operating traces, the amp draw to lift a 30-40 pound anchor should not be run through a simple switch.
  • Deckhand 25 plastic Helical gear is the sacrificial component when an excess load/impact is on the anchor system, if the user fails to support the anchor during transit the bouncing of the anchor will damage the helical gear.
  • Deckhand 25 is basically the same product as the original Deckhand from the 1980’s, most of the parts can be installed on Deckhand, Deckhand 15, Deckhand 18, Deckhand 35, etc.
